It is housed in a beautiful neo-Baroque building. In addition to three permanent stages, it has a seasonal Summer Stage and a mobile outdoor stage. The classicist Zwinger was designed in 1767 by Carl Gotthard Langhans as a club for the chancery brotherhood, which in 1880 made way for the seat of the Christian Merchants’ Association. In 1892 the Zwinger was demolished in connection with plans to widen today’s Theatre Street and to lay out Theatre Square. The present-day theatre building was built in neo-Baroque style according to a design by Paul Kieschke and Richard Bielenberg between 1892 and 1894, and extended between 1905 and 1909 according to an earlier design by Albert Grau.
